How to Meet the 150-Hour Requirement
Many colleges and universities offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in accounting. To obtain 150 semester hours of education, students do not necessarily have to get a master’s degree. They can meet the requirement at the undergraduate level or get a bachelor’s degree and take some courses at the graduate level. Students can also choose any of the following:
Combine an undergraduate accounting degree with a master’s degree at the same school or at a different one;
Combine an undergraduate degree in some other discipline with a master’s in accounting or an MBA with a concentration in accounting;
Enroll in an integrated five-year professional accounting school or program leading to a master’s degree in accounting.
In most cases, the additional academic work needed to acquire the technical competence and develop the skills required by today’s CPA is best obtained at the graduate level. Graduate-level programs are an excellent way to more fully develop skills such as communication, presentation, and interpersonal relations, and to integrate them with the technical knowledge being acquired.
In addition, it has been shown that students who get a graduate education have a substantially higher rate of success on the Uniform CPA Examination. Further, master’s degree holders receive starting salaries that are approximately 10 to 20 percent higher than the starting salaries of those with only bachelor’s degrees. Finally, there is evidence that promotions to manager and partner and to corporate managerial positions are increasingly going to individuals with master’s degrees.
For these reasons, leading professional organizations such as the AICPA, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, and the Federation of Schools of Accountancy have consistently supported the 150-hour education requirement for entry into the accounting profession.

WE NEED Volunteers — Opportunities (if you are BAP member you will earn service hours for participating):

We are currently looking for two enthusiastic accounting students to volunteer at our 20th Anniversary Auction this year. We basically need to tabulators that will tab up the auction items and help with check out.  The Corvallis Environmental Center’s mission is to educate, engage and inspire people to create a healthy, sustainable community. We have three programs currently working to reach this goal: Avery House Nature Center, Edible Corvallis Initiative and Energize Corvallis.  Our 20th Anniversary Auction on October 25th is our first Auction and we are planning on a great turnout and fun event.
Please contact Diane bishopdi@onid.oregonstate.edu or Brandi bigelowb@onid.oregonstate.edu if you are interested in volunteering.  You will earn service hours for BAP if you volunteer.

This year’s event is This Magic Moment!  It will be a 50’s themed event and if anyone wishes to dress up accordingly … go for it, but it is completely optional.  I’d like to have coverage from 6:00 – 10:30 at the latest. We would need the following coverage:
1. 4 students for Data Entry  (This continues throughout the evening)
2. Date entry involves the following tasks:
3.  Entering any new Bidders not previously entered into the data base.  (This is normally minimal)
4.  Entering the winning Bidder # for all Sales.  (This begins around 6:45.  The data base is a Windows program and entries go pretty quickly for each sale)
5.  Printing Receipts at the end of the evening for the Bidders who purchased Auction Items.  (Sometimes corrections or additional sales may need to be entered at this time)
6.  2 students to file the Bidder Sheets.  (This continues throughout the evening)
7.  4 students to assist in closing the Tables in the various rooms and bringing the bidder sheets to the check-out area for data entry.  (The tables will begin closing around 6:45 and instructions for closing will be provided that evening at 6:00.)  Students closing the tables would be finished around7:30.

These sessions are a great opportunity to have any and all questions answered.

We are asking that students take a moment to RSVP to us-porcampusrecruit@kpmg.com with their name, session(s) attending, and graduation date so that we can have a rough estimate for room set-up and target audience.

Seattle opportunity from a recent alumni:
Since graduating — I have moved on to an accounting position at Trupanion, a start-up in Seattle.  I wanted to pass along a summer accounting internship opportunity. We also have other internships in our legal, marketing, and actuarial departments if other students are interested.  Below is the link to our website with  list of open positions.  Trupanion is a fast growing start up and I would like to add a fellow beav to our accounting team!

Please make sure to call and make an appointment to have your Senior Composite picture taken! The Ball Studio has offered to take pictures for FREE of Accounting Graduates! Having a ‘Class of 2014’ Composite hanging in the new business building will really mean a lot to the Accounting Professors.  It’s the least we can do in return for all of the hours they’ve spent teaching us the difference between a debit and a credit. The deadline for pictures is May 15th, 2014 so please make your appointment early!www.theballstudio.com theballstudio@gmail.com (541) 753-5721
